MYP Individuals & Societies Curriculum Design:
Esbjerg International School
At Esbjerg International School, I had the opportunity to be the sole Secondary Humanities Teacher during the MYP Authorization process. During this time, I acted as Department Head, designing the entire curriculum and adapting former IGCSE curriculum to the MYP's inquiry approach. Here is a brief overview of the Units of Study:

MYP 1:
Students in Grade 6 begin the year with a foundations unit where we will conduct a world geography orientation, learn strategies in historical thinking, and explore our own own personal orientation in space and time. We will then delve into the development of human innovation from prehistoric humans and Indus Valley Civilizations to the birth of Republics and world trade. By understanding our world’s socio-political foundations students will be able to better participate as active citizens in the modern world.

MYP 2:
Students in Grade 7 will be begin the year with an exploration of the world’s religions and a number of medieval civilizations including those in Africa, America, Asia, and Europe. The people who lived in medieval times- the years between ancient and modern times- made many contributions to world history. Advances in science, technology, philosophy, and the arts helped shape our modern world. We will then end the year with a look at some of the monumental impacts of time’s many innovations.
MYP 3
Students in Grade 8 will begin the year studying major themes in colonization and globalization, one of the indicators of development, oppression, and change. We will then delve into WWI and monumental Revolutions that lead to the transition from monarchy to the birth of modern political systems. We will end the year with sustainable development and the impacts of the industrial revolution.

MYP 4
Students in Grade 9 focus the year studying themes in development and globalization, one of the indicators of conflict and change. We will delve into the rise and tyranny of nationalism, WWII, Colonization in Apartheid South Africa, and modern Civil Rights movements across the globe.
MYP 5
Students in Grade 10 will be begin the year with an exploration of ideologies in government and economy and the rise of communism and the Cold War. We will explore advances in science, technology, and trade and how they lead to modern conflicts worldwide. Students will culminate the year with both an independent research project and a social action design related to environmental preservation and human development.
