Fantasy in Literature

EMP Museum, Seattle

I had the opportunity to work in conjunction with the EMP museum and my humanities team to design a fantasy writing unit that integrated the arts, social studies content, and narrative writing.   I coordinated the residencies of 8 local artists at Washington Middle School to teach various art forms to our students ranging from map making and wire sculpture, to drama/dance.

I also coordinated the culminating field trip for our 400 6th graders to experience the Fantasy in Literature exhibit at the EMP.   They had the opportunity to see original manuscripts from authors such as JRR Tolkien to costumes from films like The Princess Bride and The Labyrinth.

WRiters in the Schools (WITS)

Seattle Arts & Lectures

I had the pleasure of learning from and working with two talented poets, Daemond Arrindell and Aaron Counts over the course of three years at Washington Middle School, Seattle Public Schools.  Both are published authors who actively work to bring the art of writing to the disenfranchised, working in detention centers, prisons, and inner city schools.

My 6th & 7th grade students were actively engaged in the writing process and three of my students were selected for publication in the Seattle Arts & Lectures WITS yearly publications, and two were asked to read their works at the book opening.
