SERVICE LEARNING
MS Refugee Response Team (AISB)
At the American International School of Bucharest, I have been actively involved in Service Learning in our community to support Ukrainian Refugees, volunteering at the local Refugee Centers, networking with local organizations and the AISB community to find people temporary housing, and leading the "Middle School Refugee Response Team" to empower Middle School students to get involved in the volunteer efforts. Those students regularly sorted and organized the donations collected by AISB, creating a "free clothing shop" and organized arts and sports activities for refugees visiting the campus. They most recently interviewed a Ukrainian teacher librarian who joined AISB to learn first hand about her experience. They also lead activities on campus for the Ukrainian Community Center run by some teachers and high school students.
Art students at AISB created these to hang around the school and also display in some of the refugee centers in Bucharest.
Many teachers and students volunteered regularly at the local refugee centers. Pictured is my coworker, Jen, who joined me and a few other colleagues to make ± 200 beds one day in preparation of new arrivals.
The AISB community provided generous donations that the students then sorted and labeled for distribution.
It was an incredibly humbling and powerful experience for my boyfriend and I to host a number of refugee students and families in our apartments at the beginning of the crisis.
