Humanities: Integrated Language Arts & Social Studies
How should an individual take action to address inequality in the world?
Within my Humanities classroom, I integrate reading, writing, and speaking & listening skills within the social studies/historical content. When at Graded: The American School of São Paulo, my 6th grade students explored the year-long inquiry question written, "How should an individual take action to address inequality in the world?"
They did this by reading class novels that exploring different aspects of inequality, from racial injustice in South Africa during Apartheid, to foot-binding and arranged marriage during the Colonization of China, to worker rights during the industrial revolution. They wrote historical fiction and argumentative pieces, read current event articles, discussed the topics/themes in literature circles, and created presentations/informational videos around current social issues.
Entry Tasks & Daily Routines
I provide a sense of consistency and clear class expectations through daily routines such as grammar practice, independent reading, mini-lessons for our writing units, and a weekly current event.
Social Action Video Project
After studying various forms of gender, racial, and economic inequalities throughout the year, my Graded students researched a specific manifestation of inequality currently present in our societies. The created a short film to educate others on this issue, connect it to our studies of history, and evaluate possible solutions to the issue.

FANTASY IN LITERATURE
At Washington Middle School, the 6th grade team integrated art into our Fantasy writing unit, utilizing our geography/map skills to envision the worlds we were describing in our stories. Students provided keys, a scale, compass rose, and natural/man-made elements on their maps.
Colonial Scrapbook Project
My 7th grade US History students depicted their understanding of daily life in the colonies though a "scrapbook" including maps, family trees, newspaper articles, obituaries, and journal entries. They had an opportunity to use their imagination to demonstrate their understanding of a historical era with historical fiction and informational writing and geographical drawings.
MYP: Individuals & Societies
At Munich International School, where I taught from 2017-2009, we utilized the MYP curriculum. I had the opportunity to be a mentor for both the 5th grade and 10th grade personal projects, monitor my 6th grade advisee's community service projects, and co-teach in both Math and Humanities classrooms. In my Humanities Classes, we focused on developing skills and understandings to...
• appreciate human and environmental commonalities and diversity
• understand the interactions and interdependence of individuals, societies and the environment
• understand how both environmental and human systems operate and evolve
• identify and develop concern for the well-being of human communities and the natural
environment
• act as responsible citizens of local and global communities
• develop inquiry skills that lead towards conceptual understandings of the relationships between
individuals, societies and the environments in which they live.
